Yeoman First Class Petty Officer Marcus A. Smith is a native of Eldon, Missouri and graduated from Eldon High School in 2008. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 2011. Upon completion of Boot Camp he attended Surface Common Core for Undesignated Personnel in Great Lakes, Illinois. His first assignment was onboard USS CROMMELIN (FFG 37) home ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While onboard CROMMELIN he was assigned to Deck Department until the ship decommissioned in October 2012. Upon decommissioning he was assigned to USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) until March 2014. It was here that he received his YN rating and advanced to YN3.
From April 2014 through June 2018 he was assigned to the Administrative Office at Strategic Communications Wing ONE (SCW-1). During his time at SCW-1 he advanced to YN2, earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare designation, attended the Navy Legal Clerk course, and participated in exercises TALISMAN SABRE-15 in Australia and NORTHERN EDGE-17 in Anchorage, Alaska. He was an active member of the command’s Diversity Committee and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program.
From June 2018 through July 2021 Petty Officer Smith was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE (NMCB 1) in Gulfport, Mississippi. During this tour he earned his Seabee Combat Warfare designation and deployed as the S1 to Guam on two separate occasions. During his first deployment in 2018 his detachment responded to two super typhoons (Typhoon Yutu and Typhoon Mangkhut) that swept through Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands. Providing disaster relieve and response to residents of the small islands. During his second deployment to Guam, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak he was a critical member of the offloading of the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT and the building of an Expeditionary Medical Facility.
Beginning in July 2021 he was assigned to Commander, Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee where he is the PERSTEMPO Functional Manager, Government Purchase Cardholder, Departmental Career Counselor and Departmental Training Officer. During his time here, he advanced to YN1 and has attended the Enlisted Leadership Development Course. From June 2023 to March 2024 YN1 was deployed as an Individual Augmentee to the U.S. Fifth Fleet. During this deployment he was the Operations Department Leading Petty Officer where he worked directly with the host nation military. He was responsible for all personnel and equipment movement onto and off the installation. Additionally, he was a cabinet member of the FCPOA and the Senior Enlisted Mentor to the JEA, furthermore, he was the Command Financial Specialist and Command Legalman and held various other department collateral duties. Petty Officer Smith has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management (Leadership) from American Military University and has earned the following military decorations: Navy Commendation Medal-1, Navy Achievement Medal-5, Good Conduct Medal-3, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Armed Forces Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and other various unit and service awards.
Petty Officer Smith has been married to his Wife Meghan Smith of Kansas City, Missouri since November 2017. They have two children, Maren who is 6 years old and Miles who is 3 years old.
